A letter was sent to Mr. Bill Gates, Co-Chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

During the Fifth Replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (Global Fund), covering for the 2017-2019 allocation period, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation pledged a total of USD 649.23 million and to date has contributed USD 2.03 billion to the fight against the three diseases through the Global Fund since its inception in 2002.

Empowering the poorest, especially women and girls, to transform their lives and combating infectious diseases that particularly affect the poorest are among the key focus areas of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and are in perfect harmony with the priorities of the Global Fund. Global Fund investments also promote gender equality and addresses human rights barriers through its grants. The Global Fund insists on the meaningful engagement of women throughout the design and implementation of the programmes it funds. The Global Fund has a strong focus on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and devotes more than one-third of its funding to Health Systems Strengthening (over USD 1 billion per year). Global Fund grants support comprehensive sexuality education and programmes to address gender-based violence. The Global Fund also provides funding for education and economic empowerment programmes for adolescent girls and young women, who are disproportionately affected by HIV.
