We are glad to introduce Ken Khoo, who joins the GFAN AP Secretariat as our new Communications Officer!

Ken brings to the role 8 years of marketing communications experience and diverse expertise in managing online and offline communication channels and engagement campaigns. He led the Brand and Marketing functions at two of his previous organisations, where he was responsible for designing and delivering organisational communications and stakeholder engagement strategies.

Ken originally started off as a digital marketer at an education charity organisation, where he developed his technical and creative skills running fundraising campaigns, community outreach activities, and managing organisational social media and web channels. In following roles, he gained further experience in strategic communications and stakeholder management, while broadening his understanding of the civil society landscape in Malaysia through engagements with various nonprofits and social impact organisations.

Ken’s involvement in Global Fund programmes started in 2020, when he served as a HIV community outreach worker under the ‘Differentiated HIV Services for Key Populations’ (DHSKP) programme in Malaysia. During the Global Fund’s Seventh Replenishment, Ken was the Campaign Consultant for our ‘In Extraordinary Times… The Power of More’ campaign carried out in 2022, providing creative and strategic input on the campaign’s key messages, look and feel, and action plan.

Ken is also actively involved in Malaysian civil society as an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, with a focus on accessibility issues that impact the wellbeing of queer communities, such as safe access to affirming mental health, sexual health, and digital security support services. Ken is part of the executive committee at People Like Us Hang Out (PLUHO), an LGBTQ+ rights organisation, and a co-founder of the BlueBird Project, a community-run mental health referral and peer support service. Ken has also conducted community-engaged research on conversion practices in Malaysia and activists’ wellbeing and burnout in East Asia.

We hope you will join us in welcoming Ken to the team and lend him your full support as we ramp up preparations for the Global Fund’s upcoming Eighth Replenishment together!
