Statement
It is Time to Reinvest, Reimagine, and Reignite to End Malaria, More Now Than Ever!
This statement is jointly released by Global Fund Advocates Network Asia-Pacific (GFAN AP), CSO Platform, Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA), Civil Society for Malaria Elimination (CS4ME) and Seven Alliance (a consortium of Asia-Pacific networks: APCOM, APN+, APNSW, APTN, ICWAP, NAPUD, Youth LEAD) on World Malaria Day 2025 with the theme “Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite”.
With less than five years to 2030, 2025 will be a year of defining moments for global health and in the fight against the world’s deadliest infectious diseases. As we commemorate this year’s World Malaria Day with the theme “Malaria Ends with Us: Reinvest, Reimagine, Reignite”, we acknowledge and honour the decades of hard-won progress made towards malaria elimination through the advancements of innovative new technologies and strategies in testing, treatment and prevention. However, there is an urgent need for action through renewed commitment, investments, and strengthened partnerships to step up the fight against this deadly epidemic!
The World Health Organisation (WHO) reported an estimated 263 million new malaria infections and 597,000 malaria deaths globally in 2023, in which the WHO Western Pacific (WP) region, South-East Asia (SEA) region, Pakistan, and Afghanistan accounted for 10.46 million malaria cases and 14,551 deaths. Malaria incidence in Asia-Pacific is concentrated in five countries where around 94% of the regions’ cases and deaths occur: Pakistan, India, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and Myanmar.
