Statement

Ending Malaria in the Asia-Pacific:
Now We Can. Now We Must.

This statement is jointly released by Global Fund Advocates Network Asia-Pacific (GFAN AP), CSO Platform, Civil Society for Malaria Elimination (CS4ME), Asia Pacific Leaders Malaria Alliance (APLMA) and Seven Alliance (a consortium of Asia-Pacific networks: APCOM, APN+, APNSW, APTN, ICWAP, NAPUD, Youth LEAD) in conjunction with World Malaria Day 2026.

On 25 April 2026, the world observes World Malaria Day with the theme “Driven to End Malaria: Now We Can. Now We Must“. This campaign highlights the unprecedented opportunity to eliminate malaria through new vaccines and tools, combined with an urgent call for sustained funding to protect vulnerable lives.

In 2024, the Asia-Pacific region saw a significant malaria resurgence with cases rising to approximately 4.8 million, driven by climate shocks, conflict and funding gaps. While 2024 saw a welcomed reduction of over 725,000 cases compared to 2023, the region faces challenges in achieving its 2030 elimination goal, with over 2 billion people still at risk.
