The #MeetTheTarget campaign is a revamped campaign that was developed by GFAN Africa and Civil Society for Malaria Elimination (CS4ME) in 2020 for the Seventh Replenishment of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) and Malaria (Global Fund). Now, #MeetTheTarget is a joint collaboration between GFAN Africa and GFAN Asia-Pacific (GFAN AP) focused on meeting the 2030 Sustainable Development Targets (SDGs) for health, especially for HIV, TB and malaria; mobilising sustainable domestic resources for health, especially for the three diseases; as well as to meet the target for the Seventh Replenishment of the Global Fund. Despite the Global Fund raising US$15.7 billion for the Seventh Replenishment, a historical figure raised by a health financing multilateral institution – the Global Fund partnership still needs to close the gap of US$2.3 billion to meet the target of at least US$18 billion.
The US$2.3 billion gap will impact the trajectory of the Global Fund in terms of achieving its vision of a world free of the burden of AIDS, TB and malaria with better, equitable health; as well as its bold, ambitious new Strategy: Fighting Pandemics and Building a Healthier and More Equitable World which sets out how the Global Fund partnership aims to accelerate impact towards the 2030 horizon. The US$2.3 billion gap will cost new HIV, TB and malaria infections and lead to preventable deaths due to AIDS, TB and malaria. This gap would also affect the projected scale-up of domestic investments of up to US$59 billion. We simply can not let this happen and reverse the gains we have collectively achieved for the past two decades.
Thus the revamped #MeetTheTarget campaign has the following objectives;
- Continue the momentum to mobilise resources for the Seventh Replenishment of the Global Fund to meet its target of at least US$18 billion.
- Encourage and advocate governments of implementing countries to increase DRM for health and for sustainable health responses including HIV, TB and malaria programmes and interventions in line with #TheUHCThatWeNeed to leave no one behind.
- Monitor and Advocate for Global Fund implementing countries to meet SDG 3 – Health and Wellbeing for all.
